The SOAP bible study! At SLC, our desire is that every person could hear from God through His Word, wherever they already are at in the world! As we read the Bible, we begin to see how God responds to things. Spending time reading the Bible re-patterns the way we think, and transforms the spirit of our mind, and helps us become more like Jesus!
S.O.A.P. is a simple and excellent way to both record and process what God is sharing with you. It’s also a useful tool to use at a later time when you want to reflect on and review some of your great moments with God. Through sharing what you’ve found with others, you may be able to look deeper into what God is speaking to you, gain new insight, and even encourage others!
S – for Scripture
Open your Bible to your reading for the day. Take time reading and allow God to speak to you. When you are done, look for a verse that particularly spoke to you that day, and write it in your journal.
O – for Observation
What do you think God is saying to you in this scripture? Ask the Holy Spirit to teach you what God is saying.
A – for Application
Personalize what you have read, by asking yourself how it applies to your life right now. Perhaps it is instruction, encouragement, a new promise, or corrections for a particular area of your life. Write how this scripture can apply to you today.
P – for Prayer
This can be as simple as asking God to help you use this scripture, or even a prayer for a greater insight on what He may be revealing to you. Remember, prayer is a two-way conversation, so be sure to listen to what God has to say! Now, write it out.
Scripture (Find a part of the Bible that inspired you to study, The Gospel of John is a great place to start, you can find an online Bible at biblegateway.com)
John 14:6 – Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.
Observation (What do we see in this verse?)
Hmmm…Jesus said he was the way, the truth, and the life. He’s saying that his direction, his way of thinking and living is the best way to connect with God.
Application (How does this impact my life)
If Jesus says that his way of living is best, maybe I should try doing as he does. I can try to forgive others, care for others as I do myself…yet these things are very difficult to do! I guess that’s a challenge for me…challenge accepted!
Prayer (a simple prayer to God)
Today, I’ll try to live your way, Jesus. Help me to forgive others and care for others as you did.
As I do my best to do this, I know it makes you proud!
Amen (‘Amen’ means let it happen)
And that’s it! You can take a verse at a time, a couple of verses at a time or a chapter at a time.
